Harvey S. Firestone ( 1868 - 1938 ) was a salesman for the Columbus Buggy Company during the 1890's, but by 1900, he began to manufacture carriage tires on his own. His big break came in 1906 when Henry Ford ordered 2,000 sets of tires for his cars. And in the following year Firestone Rubber & Tire sold in excess of 100,000 tires. Needless to say, the company was on the road to success.
The firm made many innovations and filed numerous patents over the years, insuring it of the dominant spot in the tire business. For example, to beat their dependence on British crude rubber, they established their own plantations in Liberia which until recently had more than 10 million rubber trees over some 80,000 acres.
