The alternative pop quartet Thisway was formed in 1997 by singer Brandon Wilde and guitarist Chris Foley; drummer Andy LaDue joined the line-up in time to record the group's first demo, and with the subsequent addition of bassist Len Monachello, the roster was complete. After generating a buzz on the New York Club scene, Thisway eventually signed to Reprise, issuing their self-titled debut LP in the spring of 1999. The self-titled debut by the New York-based quartet Thisway is a crisp, clean disc of alternative pop that probably rules the airwaves is some parallel universe. The band manages to turn the ordinary twists of daily life into engaging lyrics as on the opener "Nice." It's a fine example of the band's ability to make universal themes (primarily dealing with relationships) into something fresh sounding. "She Takes" borders on power pop reminiscent of Cheap Trick, and "Wanna Be" is a breezy ode to inner confusion (a theme that recurs throughout), featuring a soaring chorus. There are also several lovely ballads in the tentatively optimistic "Crawl" (with shimmering strings arranged by producer David Kahne) and the more potent "Come Down," which allows lead singer Brandon Wilde to showcase some powerful vocals. There really isn't a weak cut on this all-too-brief (a mere 35 minutes) release that should appeal to fans of intelligent pop music that values substance over image.
