History of Composition Dolls
Composition dolls overtook the market for Bisque dolls in the early 20th century. Hailed by American doll makers a "unbreakable" compared to the Bisque or Porcelain Dolls. The novelty of the new material for dolls, coupled with World War I, helped to bring down the once mighty German doll making industry & helped to make America the premier dollmaking country of the early to mid 20th century. Composition is generally a mixture of glue & sawdust. It is heavier & denser than paper
Mache
& composition was easily molded, thus making it an excellent material to make dolls with. Composition was used to make doll bodies for many years, from approximately the late 1870's, long before it was widely used to make doll heads. Since the material a doll Head is made of determines the Type of doll it is, only dolls with composition Heads are referred to as Composition Dolls. Composition dolls were made from approximately 1909 through the early 1950's. The height of the composition market was the 1920's through the 1940's. Composition dolls, especially those with a heavily sealed or lacquered finish, are especially prone to fine cracks, called crazing. The crazing is cause by changes in moisture & temperature. because so many of these dolls have crazed over the years, crazing on a composition doll is acceptable to collectors. In the late 1940's doll companies finally created the first truly unbreakable dolls out of plastic. If you dropped a hard plastic doll it did not break, if you put it near a fire it did not ignite & if you got it wet (like composition) you did not ruin the finish. Plus hard plastic dolls were inexpensive. After plastic dolls were introduced the composition dolls slowly faded away by the 1950's.
